Earthquake in Carabobo and Yaracuy: The Silent Crisis in Rural Communities

The devastation in Caracas and La Guaira is immense, and the needs there are overwhelming. At the same time, many of the smaller rural communities near the earthquake epicenters are receiving far less attention.

The earthquake epicenters were located just west and southwest of Morón, in the Morón–San Felipe corridor. The region experienced severe shaking, and authorities continue to inspect homes, schools, bridges, and public infrastructure for structural damage.

The community is improvising hospitals because of the situation caused by the earthquake.

Landslides and debris have damaged roads across parts of western Carabobo and eastern Yaracuy, making it difficult for emergency assistance to reach many smaller communities. Aftershocks continue to pose an ongoing risk.

While major cities naturally attract the first wave of media coverage and humanitarian response, the towns and villages surrounding Morón and extending toward San Felipe are often overlooked. These rural communities have fewer local resources and are typically among the last to receive outside assistance.

Next Step is concentrating its emergency response on these overlooked communities, where many families have limited access to food, clean water, and essential supplies. Our local team and trusted partners are identifying those with the greatest needs so that relief reaches families who might otherwise be left behind.
